The St. Mary’s County Chamber of Commerce is seeking qualified applicants to fill the position of Chamber President/CEO. Information on our county and the application process is provided below.
St. Mary’s County is situated on a peninsula in Southern Maryland and has over 500 miles of shoreline on the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. The Naval Air Station, Patuxent River produces over 22,000 jobs including military, civilian and defense contractors. It is the home to U.S. Naval Air Systems Command, including the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division. With over 200 high-tech aerospace and defense contractors, the county has emerged as a center for maritime aviation research, development, testing, evaluation and acquisition with a bright future in the commercial development of unmanned and autonomous systems.
The county’s population of 110,000 represents 2% of the state’s population. The area combines access to high-technology jobs in a community that has a rich heritage and a myriad of outdoor sport and recreational opportunities. The county’s location allows for easy access to major metropolitan areas while offering a high quality of life and rural settings.
The county’s total civilian labor force is just over 56,000. In addition to the U.S Navy, there are over 2,000 businesses in the county representing a cross section of diversity in size, products and services.
In early 2017 the County adopted people- and place-based strategies to grow and diversify the local economy. While seeking to retain and develop existing industries including defense, agriculture, seafood, light manufacturing, and retail/service businesses, the plan identifies new markets for business growth. The strategies include industry cluster and innovation- driven approaches, including the opening of a new Business Incubator. The plan includes the role of tourism and hospitality in diversifying the economy while continuing to protect and grow the Navy’s mission at the Naval Air Station Patuxent River.
